Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
AURORA, Colo., July 14 (UPI) -- Aaron Goldberg, a 22-year-old Californian, shot a 6-under 65 Monday to take the lead after the first round of stroke play at the U.S. Amateur Public Links.
Goldberg's round included eight birdies against just two bogeys at 7,551-yard Murphy Creek Golf Course, the longest layout in APL championship history by more than 400 yards.
Goldberg had a one-shot lead over Zachary Zaremba and Travis Reid, who opened with 66s to share second place. Rickie Fowler and Corey Nagy shared fourth place at 67.
There were 24 players overall within five shots of Goldberg's lead.
The championship continues with another 18 holes of stroke play Tuesday, then four rounds of match play starting Wednesday, and ends with the 36-hole final Saturday.
Only the low 64 scorers in stroke play advance to match play.
