GREEN BAY, Wis., July 11 (UPI) -- The Green Bay Packers announced Friday they would not give up the rights to retired quarterback Brett Favre, who this week had asked them to do so.

Favre tearfully announced his retirement following the 2007 season, but in recent days has hinted at the possibility of playing again -- either for the Packers or some other team.

For Favre to play with a club other than the Packers, Green Bay would have to give him permission. A statement released by the team Friday made it clear the Packers were not willing to do that.

"As a retired player, Brett has the option to apply for reinstatement with Commissioner (Roger) Goodell," the statement said. "If that were to occur, he would become an active member of the Green Bay Packers."

The statement indicated the team preferred that Favre remain retired.

"We wanted him to return and welcomed him back on more than one occasion," the Packers said. "The finality of his decision to retire was accepted by the organization and the Packers made the commitment to move forward."

Favre established NFL records with 61,655 passing yards and 442 touchdown throws.
