NEW YORK, July 7 (UPI) -- Brett Gardner stroked a 10th-inning single Sunday night to give the New York Yankees a 5-4 win over Boston.

Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon (3-3) gave up a lead-off single to Robinson Cano in the 10th and Cano took second on a bunt by Melky Cabrera. Papelbon struck out pinch-hitter Wilson Betemit but Gardner punched a ground ball off the glove of shortstop Julio Lugo, driving in Cano with the game winner.

Gardner had two hits and a run scored and Cano smacked a two-run triple for the Yankees, who split the four-game series with Boston.

Alex Rodriguez had a solo homer for New York, his 18th home run of the season and his 536th MLB career homer. Rodriguez is tied with Mickey Mantle for 13th on baseball's all-time home run list.

Yankees starter Joba Chamberlain allowed three runs on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts in six innings.

Mariano Rivera (3-3) got the win, pitching two scoreless innings in relief.

Kevin Youkilis and Sean Casey had two hits and one run apiece for the Red Sox, who head back to Boston with three wins to show for a 10-game road trip.

Dustin Pedroia drove in two runs with a single that stretched his hitting streak to 14 games.

Tim Wakefield allowed three runs on four hits with five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings for Boston.
