The No.17 Rahal Letterman Racing driver crossed the finish line 2.4009 seconds ahead of Darren Manning to record his first win in 16 career IndyCar starts.
"I'm so happy, I can't even tell you," said Hunter-Reay after he became the fourth first-time Indy Racing League winner this season. "I was driving my rear-end off those last couple of laps. This team is awesome. They do an amazing job. And now we're in victory circle. It's awesome. This is our dream come true."
Tony Kanaan, Buddy Rice and Marco Andretti completed the top-five finishers, while Dan Wheldon and Helio Castroneves had disappointing results.
Castroneves was 16th while Wheldon finished 24th.
