SAN FRANCISCO, July 3 (UPI) -- Mike Fontenot put Chicago in front with an eighth-inning homer Wednesday and the Cubs survived a ninth-inning scare to defeat San Francisco 6-5.
Chicago won its second straight after losing the first four games of its current road swing.
The Cubs had a 5-2 advantage wiped out in the seventh inning when Ray Durham hit a three-run homer off Carlos Marmol.
Chicago quickly regained the lead, however, on Fontenot's fifth homer of the year, which came on a 3-1 pitch from Tyler Walker (3-4).
Marmol (2-3) got the win despite surrendering the lead and Kerry Wood earned a shaky save, his 21st.
After Wood retired the first two Giants in the ninth on five pitches, pincher-hitter Jose Castillo tripled. But Wood needed only three pitches to strike out Fred Lewis and end the game.
