Phelps sets world mark in Oly swim trials

OMAHA, June 29 (UPI) -- Michael Phelps set a 400-meter individual medley world record Sunday in the U.S. Olympic swimming trials in Omaha.

Phelps, 22, was clocked in 4:05.25, breaking his own world record of 4:06.22.

Ryan Lochte also broke the old record, placing second in 4:06.08,

The top two finishers in each event qualify for the Games.

Phelps won eight medals -- six gold and two bronze -- at the 2004 Olympics in Australia.

The young star is entered in eight events at the trials.

American Mark Spitz holds the record for the most gold medals at a single Olympics, having won seven in Munich 32 years ago.

Teenager Inbee Park wins U.S. Women's Open

EDINA, Minn., June 29 (UPI) -- Nineteen-year-old Inbee Park won the U.S. Women's Open in Edina, Minn., by four strokes Sunday -- her first professional title.

Park, the youngest player to win the 63-year-old championship, closed with a 2-under-par 71 for a total of 9-under 283.

Helen Alfredsson shot a 75 and took second place at 287.

Angela Park (73) tied for third at 288 with In-Kyung Kim (75) and third-round leader Stacy Lewis (78).

"I am very honored to win this event. I still can't believe I did it," said Inbee Park, who won the U.S. girls junior title six years ago.

"It's just so amazing, I am so honored. It has been 10 years since I started playing golf and it (a pro win) finally happened, so I am excited about that."

The champion's check was $585,000.

The tour's two biggest stars finished far down the list.

Annika Sorenstam eagled the final hole, ended up with a 5-over-par 78 and tied for 24th place, and top-ranked Lorena Ochoa carded a 74 and finished in a tie for 31st place.

Kenny Perry claims his second '08 title

GRAND BLANC, Mich., June 29 (UPI) -- Kenny Perry closed with a 6-under-par 66 Sunday and won the Buick Open in Grand Blanc, Mich.

Perry's win at the Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club was his second this season.

The 47-year-old tour veteran finished at 19-under-par 269, a stroke ahead of Woody Austin and Bubba Watson.

Austin (68) and Watson (68) both had a chance to force a playoff, but Austin bogeyed the last hole and Watson missed a 12-foot birdie attempt.

"You need to make as many birdies as you can make," Perry said. "I got in at 19-under and I still didn't think it was going to be enough. I was fortunate enough to get it done."

Perry collected $900,000 for the win.

Bob Tway (65), Matt Jones (67) and Ken Duke (67) tied for fourth place at 17-under-par 271.

Daniel Chopra, the leader after three rounds, slipped to a 3-over 75 and finished in a tie for 17th.

Perry's other victory this year was at The Memorial in Dublin, Ohio, June 1.

Kurt Busch wins latest Sprint Cup race

LOUDON, N.H., June 29 (UPI) -- Kurt Busch won Sunday's rain-shortened Sprint Cup Lenox Industrial Tools 301 auto race in Loudon, N.H.

Busch captured his first victory this season when a rainstorm developed and NASCAR officials called the race on the 284th of 300 scheduled laps.

It was the 18th victory in his Sprint Cup career. He started from the 26th position.

"This is unbelievable to get into victory lane (and) we might not have had the best car," he said. "It gives us a boost in the points race, but it's not going to erase our deficit."

Busch had not won since the Pennsylvania 500 last August, a span of 31 races.

Michael Waltrip, J.J. Yeley, Martin Truex Jr. and Elliott Sadler completed the top-five finishers.

Only Truex was in the top-10 before the final round of pit stops.

Tony Stewart dominated much of the race's early portion, but after a pit stop during Lap 271, he finished in 20th place.
