RICHMOND, Va., June 27 (UPI) -- Tony Kanaan won the pole Friday for Saturday's running of the SunTrust Indy Challenge at the Richmond International Raceway.
Kanaan completed a four-lap qualifying effort over the .750-mile track in 1:04.333 -- or 167.876 mph. It was his second pole of the season and the 10th of his IndyCar career.
Kanaan is coming off a major disappointment, having spun and hit the wall last week while challenging for the top spot in Iowa.
Starting alongside Kanaan will be teammate Marco Andretti, who turned in a time of 1:04.3642.
The second row will consist of Graham Rahal and series points leader Scott Dixon, winner of the Indianapolis 500.
Last year's race on this track was captured by Dario Franchitti, who led all but eight of the 250 laps. He has since moved on to the NASCAR Sprint Cup series.
