Chicago's Dye is AL player of the week

Chicago's Jermaine Dye was selected the American League player of the week Monday.

NEW YORK, June 23 (UPI) -- Chicago White Sox outfielder Jermaine Dye was selected the American League player of the week, the league announced Monday.

Dye hit .417 with three doubles, five home runs and 13 runs batted in for the week in which the White Sox swept three games from the Pittsburgh Pirates and then were swept in three games by the Chicago Cubs.

He had five hits in the Pirates series, including three home runs and nine RBI. Dye added five hits and four RBI against the Cubs.

Games played June 16-22 were considered for this week's award. Also considered by AL officials were Boston's Dustin Pedroia, Oakland's Kurt Suzuki and New York's Andy Pettitte.
