TORONTO, June 20 (UPI) -- Canadian musicians have been invited to create a new theme song for the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.'s decades-old game broadcasts.
The broadcaster's Web site said entries for the "Hockey Night in Canada" show should be uploaded before Aug. 31, and then national online public voting will begin Oct. 4.
The winner will receive $100,000 and half of the broadcast royalties, and the CBC will donate the other half to minor league hockey programs.
The winner will be announced during an Oct. 11 broadcast, the network said.
The CBC created an uproar in the country earlier this month when it walked away from renewing rights to the song used for 40 years, and balked at paying $500 to songwriter Dolores Claman every time it aired.
Days later, the private CTV network announced it had purchased the rights for an undisclosed amount for use on its TSN cable sports NHL broadcasts, along with its hockey coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics.
