
NEW YORK, June 19 (UPI) -- Alex Rodriguez' sixth inning RBI single Thursday gave the New York Yankees a 2-1 win over San Diego.
Rodriguez' lone hit snapped a 1-1 tie with one out in the bottom of the sixth put New York on top for good and completed a three-game inter-league sweep at Yankee Stadium.
New York's Jose Molina hit a game-tying sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Derek Jeter had two of the Yankees' five hits.
Winner Jose Veras (2-0) tossed 1 1/3 shutout innings after starter Joba Chamberlain surrendered an earned run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings with three walks and nine strikeouts.
Closer Mariano Rivera struck out the side in the ninth, recording his 20th save this season and increasing his career strikeout total to 896, passing Fritz Peterson (893) for 15th place in Yankees' history.
San Diego's Tony Clark hit an RBI double in the fourth.
The losing pitcher was Josh Banks (2-1).
