OMAHA, June 18 (UPI) -- Michael Phelps, who won six gold medals at the 2004 Olympics, has entered nine events at this year's U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials.
The Olympic qualifying meet begins June 29 with swimmers needing to finish first or second in an event to make it to this summer's Beijing Olympics.
Mark Spitz holds the record for most gold medals won at a single Olympics, having captured seven in Munich 32 years ago.
Phelps, 22, is entered in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter freestyle, the 200- and 400-meter individual medley, the 100- and 200-meter backstroke and the 100- and 200-meter butterfly.
Although his name appears in the heat sheets for all those events, as released by USA Swimming, he could withdraw from one or more of them before the competition begins.
Katie Hoff, 19, is entered in seven events. She competed in the 2004 Olympics, but did not win a medal.
The Olympics open Aug. 8.
