Liberty Bowl founder Bud Dudley dies

MEMPHIS, June 17 (UPI) -- Ambrose F. "Bud" Dudley, founder and former executive director of the Liberty Bowl, died Tuesday at age 88.

Dudley founded the Liberty Bowl in 1959. The game was held from 1959 to 1963 at what was Municipal Stadium, then John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia. In 1964, the bowl game was moved to Convention Hall in Atlantic City, making it the first indoors bowl.

In 1965, Dudley directed switching the game to Memphis and Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.

Dudley retired as executive director of the bowl game in 1994. He also was director of athletics at Villanova University from 1953 until 1957.
