WOMEN'S DUBAI TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

'S-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands, June 17 (UPI) -- Defending champion Anna Chakvetadze notched a second-round victory Tuesday at the Ordina Open tennis tournament in the Netherlands.

Chakvetadze, seeded second and given a first-round bye, escaped a threat from qualifier Angelique Kerber after a relatively easy first set. Chakvetadze took the first set in nine games, but Kerber answered by winning the second set, also 6-3, and forced the third set into a tiebreaker before Chakvetadze won 7-1 in the tiebreaker.

Third-seeded Dinara Safina won for the 14th time in 15 matches -- the only loss coming in the French Open finals -- in taking out Camille Pin, 6-1, 6-4. In another second-round match, eighth-seeded Alona Bondarenko got past Marina Erakovic, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Bondarenko next is paired against Chakvetadze.

A pair of winning streaks were snapped as sixth-seeded Maria Kirilenko was ousted, 7-5, 6-4, by wild-card entrant Sorana Cirstea in a first-round match and Kateryna Bondarenko was defeated, 6-3, 6-3, by Tamarine Tanasugarn. Kirilenko won last week's tournament in Spain while Kateryna Bondarenko won an event in Birmingham, England.

Also in the first round Tuesday, Yung-Jan Chan beat Sofia Arvidsson, 7-5, 7-5.
