OAKLAND, Calif., June 15 (UPI) -- Edson Buddle scored a hat trick Saturday night to lead the Los Angeles Galaxy past San Jose 3-0.

The win gave the Galaxy (6-4-2) sole possession of first place in the Western Conference, three points ahead of the Houston Dynamo.

The loss kept the Earthquakes (3-7-1) in last place in the conference.

Buddle opened the scoring in the sixth minute off a header by Josh Tudela. Buddle made it 2-0 in the 63rd minute with a diving header past San Jose goalie Joe Cannon, and then finished off his second hat trick of the season on a feed from Mike Randolph.
