HALLE, Germany, June 15 (UPI) -- No. 1 seed Roger Federer won the Gerry Weber Open tennis tournament Sunday by beating unseeded Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-4.

Sunday's final victory at the event in Halle, Germany, extended Federer's winning streak on grass courts to 59 straight matches and gave him 55 career titles.

His last loss on grass was in 2002 when he suffered a first-round setback at the hands of Croatia's Mario Ancic.

"I played great tennis all week," Federer told German television. "I didn't lose my serve once, which I don't think I've ever managed before in a tournament, so it's very special for me."

The native of Basel, Switzerland, skipped the Halle tournament in 2007 after winning it each of the previous four years.

The German Kohlschreiber, a loser in the 2007 semifinals, was playing in his second final this season, but was left wanting in his bid for a third career title.
