HOUSTON, June 13 (UPI) -- A solo homer by Derek Jeter in the eighth was the decisive blow Friday, lifting the New York Yankees to a 2-1 win over Houston.
It was the first regular-season appearance ever in Houston for the Yankees, who have won seven out of their last 10 games.
New York's Joba Chamberlain, making his first road start, limited Houston to six hits and one run over six innings. He was matched by the Astros' Shawn Chacon, who allowed a run on three hits in six frames.
Neither starter figured in the decision, with Jose Veras (1-0) getting his first major league win in 38 career appearances. He struck out three in two innings of relief and Kyle Farnsworth put in a perfect ninth for his first save.
Jeter's homer came off Doug Brocail (2-1).
Jeter hit the second pitch Brocail threw in the game to right for his fourth home run of the season.
