Robredo through to Warsaw quarterfinals

WARSAW, Poland, June 12 (UPI) -- Defending champion Tommy Robredo advanced Thursday to the quarterfinals of the $670,000 Warsaw Open tennis tournament.

Robredo, seeded second this year, was leading Wayne Odesnik 6-4, 1-1 when Odesnik retired due to a right leg injury. He goes against Oscar Hernandez in one of four quarterfinals Friday.

Hernandez made the quarters by upsetting eighth-seeded Albert Montanes, 6-3, 6-2.

In other second-round matches Thursday, fifth-seeded Guillermo Canas needed a third set before eliminating Santiago Ventura, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, and Fabio Fognini was ahead 5-4 when Christophe Rochus retired with a right leg injury. Canas and Fognini are paired against each other Friday.

The other two quarterfinals Friday have top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko taking on Evgeny Korolev and No. 3-seeded Juan Monaco playing seventh-seeded Marcel Granollers.
