Report: Feds question NBA referee Hollins

NEW YORK, June 12 (UPI) -- Retired NBA referee Hue Hollins has been questioned by the FBI about former colleague Dick Bavetta, The New York Times said.

Hollins told the newspaper he was asked if he ever noticed that Bavetta "was making sure that the home team would win," and that agents did not ask about a specific team, game or series.

Bavetta was one of three referees at Game 6 of the 2002 Western Conference finals between Sacramento and the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Lakers won, 106-102, to set up a deciding seventh game.

The Lakers shot 27 free throws in the final quarter and scored 16 of their last 18 points at the line.

The questions are connected to claims made by disgraced referee Tim Donaghy, who pleaded guilty to federal charges he shared inside information on NBA games with gamblers.

Commissioner David Stern has called Donaghy's claims "baseless."
