
BARCELONA, Spain, June 11 (UPI) -- Wild-card entrant Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez upset fifth-seeded Pauline Parmentier at the $145,000 Barcelona KIA tennis tournament in Spain.
Martinez Sanchez, ranked 140th in the world, excited her home crowd with a 6-2, 6-4 win over the No. 56-ranked Parmentier in a second-round match.
Also Wednesday, sixth-seeded Sara Errani dumped Varvara Lepchenko 6-4, 7-5. Stephanie Cohen-Aloro defeated Magdalena Rybarikova 7-6 (7-3), 6-0; and, in a battle of Spanish wild-card entrants, Nuria Llagostera Vives routes Eloisa Compostizode Andres 6-3, 6-0.
The second round is scheduled to be completed Thursday. Second-seeded Maria Kirilenko is paired against Suarez Navarro" class="tpstyle">Carla Suarez Navarro in a key match.
