Bammer among DFS Classic upset victims

US OPEN TENNIS DAY 7 IN NEW YORK

BIRMINGHAM, England, June 10 (UPI) -- Fourth-seeded Sybille Bammer was among three seeded players ousted in straight sets Tuesday at the $200,000 DFS Classic tennis tournament in England.

Bammer, who was given a first-round bye, was defeated, 6-3, 7-5, by wild-card entrant Melanie South.

No. 9-seeded Tamira Paszek was routed, 6-1, 6-0, by Tamarine Tanasugarn and 13th-seeded Aravane Rezai was upset, 6-1, 6-4, by Bethanie Mattek. No. 15-seeded Ekaterina Makarova survived a tough 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 7-5 match with Angelique Kerber.

Only eighth-seeded Michaella Krajicek, a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Tatiana Poutchek, had a relatively easy time of it among seeded players in second-round play Tuesday.

First-round action saw 11th-seeded Casey Dellacqua beat Julie Ditty, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, and 12th-seeded Kateryna Bondarenko take out Anne Keothavong, 6-3, 6-2, while Camille Pin upset 16th-seeded Anastasia Rodionova, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2).

The winner of the grass-court Wimbledon Championships tuneup will take home $31,000.
