NEW YORK, June 9 (UPI) -- Jose Guillen's ninth-inning home run Monday lifted the Kansas City Royals to a 3-2 victory over the New York Yankees.
Guillen hit a 0-2 pitch from Yankees reliever Mariano Rivera (2-2) and it just cleared the left-field wall for his 11th home run of the season.
The shot earned the Royals a split of the four-game series in New York. Guillen had nine hits, including four home runs, and 11 runs batted in the series.
New York starter Mike Mussina shut the Royals down until the seventh when Guillen doubled to center. After the inning's second out, Miguel Olivo hit a 2-0 pitch into the left-field seats.
The Yankees tied the score in the bottom of the inning with a double by Bobby Abreu and a home run by Alex Rodriguez.
Those runs came off Kansas City starter Luke Hochevar, who allowed four hits through six innings. Yasuhiko Yabuta (1-0) earned the win by getting the final out of the eighth inning and Joakim Soria survived a shaky ninth for his 14th save.
