TORONTO, June 9 (UPI) -- The private Canadian network CTV announced Monday it had purchased the rights to the theme song for the national broadcaster's Hockey Night in Canada broadcast.
There was a national uproar last week when the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., announced it wasn't renewing 40-year-old rights with the song's writer, Dolores Claman.
The driving melody was described by media throughout the country as Canada's second national anthem, but the CBC said it wasn't willing to pay $500 every time it aired. Terms of the CTV deal weren't released.
CTV's president of revenue, business planning and sports, Rick Brace, issued a news release saying the network wanted to save "a cherished piece of Canadiana" by acquiring rights to the song.
"It is an iconic tune, embraced by Canadians everywhere, and we felt it was imperative to save it," the release said.
The network said it would air the song during NHL broadcasts on its TSN cable sports channel, the French-language RDS network as well as during hockey coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics.
