
ARLINGTON, Texas, June 7 (UPI) -- Gabe Cross hit a two-run homer in the top of the second inning Saturday and the Tampa Bay Rays held on to edge Texas 5-4.
Willy Aybar hit a two-run double in the eighth. One run scored on Jamey Wright's ninth-inning wild pitch, while B.J. Upton had two of the nine hits for the Rays, who had split their previous 10 contests.
The winner was reliever J.P. Howell (5-0) after starter Andy Sonnanstine yielded two earned runs and six hits in five innings.
Dan Wheeler earned his second save despite giving up a run in the bottom of the ninth.
Milton Bradley led Texas with two hits, one a solo homer in the eighth, and two RBI. Josh Hamilton and Michael Young knocked in one run each while three others had two hits for the Rangers, who have dropped three of four.
The losing pitcher was reliever Joaquin Benoit (3-2).
