MEMPHIS, June 6 (UPI) -- Gavin Coles shot the lowest round of the tournament Friday to grab a share of the crowded top spot after 36 holes of the St. Jude Championship in Memphis.

Coles shot a 6-under 64 over the TPC-Southwind course and was tied for first at 3-under 137 with Tommy Armour III, Michael Bradley, Jason Dufner, Dean Wilson and Marc Turnesa.

Vijay Singh, Alex Cejka, Michael Letzig and Davis Love III were all a shot back.

Only 13 players were under par at the tournament's midway point and the cut came at 5-over 145. There were 26 players within four shots of the lead.

First-round leader Boo Weekley stumbled to a 75 and was three shots off the pace.

Coles, a four-time winner on the Nationwide Tour, recorded a bogey-free round.

"It was difficult, but if you putted well today, you would have had a pretty decent score," Coles said. When I did get in trouble, my putter sort of got me out of it."
