SAN DIEGO, June 6 (UPI) -- Scott Schoeneweis hit Paul McAnulty with a pitch with the bases loaded in the ninth inning Thursday, leading the San Diego Padres past the New York Mets 2-1.
Three San Diego relievers combined to throw hitless ball over the final three innings, keeping the Padres in a 1-1 tie. San Diego then took advantage of ninth-inning wildness on the part of Schoeneweis (0-2) to pull out the victory.
Scott Hairston drew a leadoff walk in the ninth and went to second when Brian Giles also walked. After the runners moved up on a grounder by Adrian Gonzalez, Kevin Kouzmanoff was walked intentionally to load the bases.
Schoeneweis then hit McAnulty, a .212 hitter, with his first pitch. That gave the win to closer Trevor Hoffman (1-4), who needed 12 pitches to work a perfect ninth.
Jose Reyes had two hits for the Mets and has reached base in 36 straight games, a club record for a leadoff hitter.
