SAN DIEGO, June 5 (UPI) -- The first competitive round of golf for Tiger Woods since he underwent knee surgery will be played in the company of his chief rival, Phil Mickelson.
The United States Golf Association has paired Woods with Mickelson for the first two rounds of next week's U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. Woods has won five of the last six PGA Tour events played on the course and Mickelson has won there three times.
Woods and Mickelson will join Adam Scott for an 11:06 a.m. EDT tee time Thursday.
Woods has not played since finishing second to Trevor Immelman at the Masters.
He underwent arthroscopic surgery the following week, but appears ready to return to action. He played a practice round at Torry Pines this week.
Immelman will be paired with fellow Masters winners Zach Johnson and Mike Weir. Defending U.S. Open champion Angel Cabrera will play in the company of current British Open champ Padraig Harrington and Davis Love III.
