Team USA loses second straight in Europe

SANTANDER, Spain, June 4 (UPI) -- Xavi Hernandez scored the only goal Wednesday and Spain handed the United States national soccer team its second straight exhibition setback 1-0.

Spain, which opens the European Championship against Russia Tuesday, ran its unbeaten streak to 16 games.

The Americans also dropped a meeting with England last week. Team USA returns to East Rutherford, N.J., Sunday to take on Argentina, the top-ranked team in the world.

Hernandez, who plays for Barcelona, scored in the 79th minute.

The United States will open qualifying for the 2010 World Cup when it takes on Barbados June 15.
