Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
SAN FRANCISCO, June 4 (UPI) -- Pedro Martinez went six innings in his first start since being injured, leading the New York Mets to a 9-6 win over the San Francisco Giants.
Martinez (1-0), who injured a left hamstring in his first start in April, gave up three runs on seven hits and three walks, while throwing 63 of 109 pitches for strikes. But he also got a couple of hits and drove in a run.
Billy Wagner recorded the final two outs for his 12th save.
The Mets' offense blew the game open with an eight-run fifth inning. Damion Easley had three hits and capped the fifth inning with a three-run double.
New York has now won six of its last eight.
Barry Zito (1-9) allowed six runs -- five earned over 4 1/3 innings. He gave up seven hits and five walks.
Travis Denker hit a three-run homer -- his first in the majors -- but the Giants went down to their second straight defeat.
