PARIS, May 31 (UPI) -- No. 1 seed Roger Federer downed Mario Ancic 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in a men's third round match Saturday at the French Open in Paris.
The reigning five-time Wimbledon and four-time U.S. Open champion encountered little resistance in the day's final match in a light drizzle on Court Chatrier at the Roland Garros tennis facility.
Ivan Ljubicic, the 28th seed, topped two-time French Open semifinalist Nikolay Davydenko 4-6 2-6 6-3 6-2 6-4.
In a match that lasted more than three hours, Ljubicic hit 15 aces and broke Davydenko's serve five times.
Unseeded Robby Ginepri, the only American remaining, topped Frenchman Florent Serra 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, his first-ever French Open win; Spain's David Ferrer, a quarterfinalist in 2005, beat former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, the 25th seed, 6-2 3-6 3-6 6-3 6-4; No. 21 Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic downed 12th-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain 6-3, 6-2 6-1; and Fernando Gonzalez beat No. 9 Stanislas Wawrinka 5-7, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
In a later match, Frenchman Gilles Simon beat Austrian lefthander Jurgen Melzer 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.
Simon faces Ljubicic in the next round.
