Perry, Goggin share Memorial lead

DUBLIN, Ohio, May 30 (UPI) -- Kenny Perry overcame a shaky start on a difficult course Friday and moved into a share of the lead with Mathew Goggin midway through the Memorial Tournament.

Perry bogeyed three of his first five holes at the Muirfield Village Golf Club course, but rallied to shoot a 1-under 71 that left him at 7-under 137. Goggin, the first-round leader, reached that mark by firing a 72.

Blustery winds and some of the fastest putting surfaces the players have seen all year made the Jack Nicklaus-designed course a rugged test. Only three players shot in the 60s.

"It's very fair. It's just hard," said Perry, the Memorial winner in 1991 and 2003. "You had to have a lot of patience today. It was a day where you knew the scores were going to be high."

Johnson Wagner shot 67, the day's low round, and moved from 105th to 22nd place.

Jerry Kelly was alone in third at 138 and Luke Donald moved into fourth at 139. Tied for fifth at 140 were Geoff Ogilvy, Nick O'Hern, Matt Kuchar and Steve Lowery.

Phil Mickelson, who won at Colonial last week, shot a 75 and was tied for 35th at 147.
