KANSAS CITY, Mo., May 29 (UPI) -- A three-run homer in the ninth by Craig Monroe tied it Wednesday and a 10th-inning blast by Justin Morneau gave Minnesota a stunning 9-8 win over Kansas City.
The Royals suffered their 10th straight loss in shocking fashion after taking a five-run lead into the ninth.
Facing an 8-3 deficit, Minnesota quickly got down to its last out in the ninth with Jason Kubel on first base. But Kubel went to second on a wild pitch by Ramon Ramirez and scored on Mike Lamb's single. Brendan Harris followed with a single, Carlos Gomez singled in a run and Monroe came in as a pinch hitter to face Joel Peralta. Monroe hit a 3-2 pitch out to left-center to tie the game.
With Peralta (0-2) still in the contest, Morneau hit the first pitch in the 10th inning over the wall in right for the game-winner.
Jesse Crain (3-2) got the win by recording the last out of the ninth and Joe Nathan came on in the 10th to earn his 14th save.
Minnesota's Livan Hernandez avoided the loss despite giving up eight runs on 13 hits in six-plus innings.
