ANAHEIM, Calif., May 29 (UPI) -- Marcus Thames hit a pair of two-run homers Wednesday, allowing Detroit to avoid a series sweep with a 6-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

Armando Galarraga (4-2) carried a shutout into the ninth and eventually got the victory by allowing two runs on four hits over 8 1/3 innings.

Thames gave Detroit a quick lead with a two-run shot in the first and the Tigers picked up another run in the inning when Edgar Renteria singled in Magglio Ordonez.

Thames delivered another two-run homer in the fifth and Detroit scored its sixth run on a sacrifice fly by Miguel Cabrera in the seventh.

Maicer Izturis hit his first homer of the season for the Angels in the ninth, a two-run shot off Galarraga.

The loss went to Joe Saunders (8-2), who allowed seven hits and five runs over five innings.
