DUBLIN, Ohio, May 29 (UPI) -- Mathew Goggin birdied four of his last six holes Thursday for a 7-under 65 that put him in the lead after one round of the Memorial Tournament in Ohio.

Two-time champion Kenny Perry, who birdied six in a row, and Jerry Kelly shared second at 66, while Brett Quigley and last week's runner-up, Rod Pampling, were at 67.

With the Jack Nicklaus-designed Muirfield Village course playing hard and fast, only 13 players broke 70.

Phil Mickelson, whose sensational shot from the trees on the final hole led to a tournament-winning birdie at Colonial last Sunday, settled for a 72 and a tie for 36th place.

"I knew today was going to be the tough day for me," Mickelson said. "I was kind of tired and didn't get a chance to rest and get ready."

Sergio Garcia, making his first start since his win at the Players Championship, also had a 72.

So did Masters champion Trevor Immelman, but it was still his best round since claiming his first major title. Immelman missed the cut in his two other starts since capturing the Masters.

Goggin's best finish on the tour has been a tie for second at the 2006 Western Open.
