Wainwright (5-2) walked one and struck out eight. The only run he allowed came on Ty Wigginton's homer in the second after St. Louis had produced a three-run first.

The loss went to Wandy Rodriguez (1-1), who made his first start since being placed on the disabled list with a groin strain April 20. Rodriguez gave up six runs on six hits in 4 2/3.

St. Louis managed three runs in the first inning despite having just one hit in the frame. The Cardinals benefited from one error in the inning and scored on a bases-loaded walk, a groundout and a wild pitch.
