Soderling, Ancic post French Open upsets

PARIS, May 27 (UPI) -- Robin Soderling and Mario Ancic ousted seeded players Tuesday in first-round play of the men's draw of the French Open.

Rain, however, continued to hamper play a day after 14 matches were delayed by wet weather. A total of 29 of the 34 matches scheduled for Tuesday were pushed back to Wednesday.

One of those was world No. 2 Rafael Nadal, whose match with Thomaz Bellucci was tied 1-1 in the first set when play was called. Nadal is seeking a fourth consecutive French Open championship.

Soderling was extremely solid in his 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 romp over 13th-seeded Juan Monaco, despite Monaco playing on his favorite clay-court surface. Ancic was also a straight-set winner with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 win over 31st-seeded Andreas Seppi.

Fourth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko claimed a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Thomas Johansson and No. 9-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

The only other result of the day found Paul Capdeville take out Mischa Zverev, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.
