
TORONTO, May 25 (UPI) -- Dustin McGowan gave up nine hits but only one run in seven innings Sunday, helping Toronto beat the Kansas City Royals 3-1.
The earned run scored on David DeJesus' sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth.
McGowan (3-4) did not walk a batter, struck out seven and 63 of his 90 pitches were strikes.
Closer B.J. Ryan recorded his 11th save this season.
Shannon Stewart, Scott Rolen and Alex Rios each knocked in one run with Stewart's fifth-inning, fielder's choice groundout driving in the eventual game-winning run that broke a 1-1 tie.
Stewart and Rod Barajas had two hits apiece for the Blue Jays, who have won six of their last eight games.
John Buck and Esteban German both had two hits in the Royals' seventh straight loss.
Losing pitcher Gil Meche (3-7) gave up two earned runs and five hits in six innings with two walks and five strikeouts.
