Johnson Wagner leads at Colonial

FORT WORTH, Texas, May 22 (UPI) -- Johnson Wagner overcame strong winds Thursday to shoot a 7-under 63 and take the lead after one round of the Colonial Invitational at Forth Worth, Texas.

It is the third time Wagner has led a PGA Tour event after 18 holes and all three occasions have been in Texas. He led after one round in Houston each of the last two years and won his first tournament there earlier this season.

Wagner had a two-shot lead over Phil Mickelson and Brett Wetterich Thursday. Glen Day was alone in fourth with a 66.

The first-round leader birdied nine holes on the tree-lined Colonial Country Club course. Only the Augusta National Golf Club has held a tour event longer than has Colonial.

"I just hit it in the fairway a lot and got off to a really good start," Wagner said. "I got by the fifth hole (the most difficult on the course) with a par, which is big for me."

Mickelson, who won here in 2000 and is playing in the tournament for the first time since 2005, birdied three holes in a four-hole span beginning at the fifth.

Corey Pavin, a two-time Colonial winner, was among those at 67.
