Cardinals' Isringhausen on disabled list

ST. LOUIS, May 17 (UPI) -- St. Louis Cardinals closer Jason Isringhausen has been placed on the disabled list with an infected right hand, General Manager John Mozeliak says.

Mozeliak said Isringhausen, who struggled in several recent closing opportunities, would be sent to the Cardinals' minor-league headquarters in Jupiter, Fla., to recuperate, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Saturday.

"He's not effective right now, so something's bothering him," Mozeliak said. "And I think medically right now that's part of it. Are there other aspects affecting him as well? I'm sure there are. But the fact is, he's not effective out there. We have to put guys on the mound who can be effective."

Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan agreed that time away from the ballpark should allow Isringhausen to regain his confidence and recover from his injury, which occurred when he sliced his hand on a clubhouse TV set.

"Izzy needs to get away, clear his mind and stay away from it a little bit," Duncan told the Post-Dispatch of the closer, who has 292 career saves. "He needs to do exactly what he's doing."
