Laffey (2-2) walked one batter and struck out six while reliever Masa Kobayashi escaped a jam in the top of the ninth by striking out both batters he faced to get his second career save.

Cleveland got one RBI from four players, including Jhonny Peralta, who had two hits and scored three runs.

The other, Ben Francisco, had two hits for the Indians, whose pitchers have given up just six runs in the last seven games. Cleveland had gone 44 1/3 innings without giving up a run until Laffey's throwing error allowed Bobby Crosby to score in the second.

Crosby and Frank Thomas had two hits apiece for the Athletics, who have dropped five of six.

The losing pitcher was starter Greg Smith (2-3).
