ARLINGTON, Texas, May 14 (UPI) -- Miguel Cairo's RBI single in the top of the 12th inning Wednesday allowed the Seattle Mariners to edge Texas 4-3.
The contest went to extra innings after a sacrifice fly by Texas centerfielder Josh Hamilton created a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth.
Yuniesky Betancourt, Jeff Clement and Jose Lopez had one RBI apiece, while Cairo and Clement had two hits each for the Mariners, who had dropped seven of their previous eight games.
The winner was closer J.J. Putz (1-1), who pitched two scoreless innings.
David Murphy and Michael Young each knocked in a run, and Murphy had a single-game career high five hits while Young had a run and two hits for the Rangers, who had won seven of eight.
The losing pitcher was Franklyn German (1-2).
Texas third baseman Hank Blalock will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Frisco Thursday. He has been on the disabled list since April 26 with a torn left hamstring.
