ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., May 12 (UPI) -- Matt Garza pitched seven shutout innings Monday, helping Tampa Bay extend its franchise-record home win streak to 10 games by beating the N.Y. Yankees 7-1.
Jonny Gomes had two hits with an RBI and scored three times for Tampa Bay, which has won five in a row overall and is a half-game behind Boston for first place in the AL East.
Tampa Bay (22-16) is six games over .500 for the first time in franchise history. It also got three hits and two RBI from Dioner Navarro and Jason Bartlett added a two-run triple for Tampa Bay, which won for the 14th time in its last 19 games.
Garza (2-1) allowed five hits and walked one before leaving after throwing 108 pitches in his longest outing of the season.
Andy Pettitte (3-4) gave up five runs on eight hits over four innings. Alberto Gonzalez had two of the six hits for the Yankees, who have lost four of their last six games.
