SAN DIEGO, May 9 (UPI) -- The San Diego Padres Friday released aging and struggling outfielder Jim Edmonds, a four-time all-Star and eight-time Gold Glove Award winner.

Edmonds, 37, was hitting just .178 in 90 at-bats this season, and had only six hits with 24 strikeouts.

He was acquired in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals in December.

"It's just not happening for him statistically," Padres Manager Bud Black said Thursday before a 5-4 loss in Atlanta. "He's not playing to how we have seen Jimmy play in the past."

In parts of 16 big league seasons with the California/Anaheim Angels (1993-99), Cardinals (2000-07) and Padres (2008), Edmonds has a career batting average of .286 with 363 homers and 1,127 RBI.

The Padres recalled outfielder Jody Gerut from Triple-A Portland and claimed left-handed pitcher Sean Henn off waivers from the New York Yankees.

Gerut can play both left- and center-field.
