DETROIT, May 7 (UPI) -- Placido Polanco singled in Edgar Renteria from third with two away in the ninth Wednesday, giving Detroit a wild 10-9 victory over Boston.
The Tigers jumped to an early 4-0 lead and had a 7-4 cushion through five innings, only to see Boston come back to take a one-run advantage into the ninth.
Jonathan Papelbon (2-1) came on to protect the lead, but started the ninth by giving up an infield single to Matt Joyce. Ryan Raburn ran for Joyce and went to second when Renteria was safe on a fielding error by shortstop Julio Lugo.
Ivan Rodriguez laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners along, after which Raburn scored on a ground out by Curtis Granderson. Renteria reached third on the ground out and scored the winning run when Polanco looped a 3-2 pitch into left.
It was Polanco's fifth hit and third RBI of the night.
Detroit pounded out 18 hits to end a five-game losing streak.
The win went to Todd Jones (1-0), who worked the top of the ninth.
Kevin Youkilis homered twice and drove in three runs for the Red Sox, who had won five in a row.
