Hamilton resigns after drug charge

ATLANTA, May 7 (UPI) -- Georgia Tech assistant football coach Joe Hamilton has resigned a day after being named in several criminal charges, including marijuana possession.

Hamilton, 31, was a quarterback for the Yellow Jackets from 1996-99 and was hired April 28 to be Tech's assistant director of player personnel under new Coach Paul Johnson.

"Today, I sadly accepted Joe's resignation," Johnson said in a released statement given to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Wednesday. "I know he has great love and concern for this program and always will. Both Athletic Director Dan Radakovich and I made it clear to Joe that we would offer any support he requires in the coming weeks and into the future. Joe will always be a part of the Yellow Jacket family."

The other charges brought against Hamilton were DUI and hit and run.

He was the Atlantic Coast Conference's player of the year in 1999, when he also was the runner-up in balloting for the Heisman Trophy, given annually to college football's top player.
