Safin and Gasquet upset at Italian Masters

ROME, May 5 (UPI) -- Former World No. 1 Marat Safin of Russia and Richard Gasquet of France were upset Monday in the first round of the $3.5 million Italian Masters.

Safin lost to fellow non-seed Stanislas Wawrinke of Switzerland 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-1. The ninth-seeded Gasquet lost to Peruvian qualifier Luis Horna 6-4, 6-1.

Thirteenth-seeded Argentine Juan Monaco beat Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas 6-0, 6-4, and 16th-seeded Britain Andy Murray advanced against qualifier Juan Martin Del Potro 5-7, 6-4, 1-0, as the Argentine retired after one game in the third set.

Also, Argentine Guillermo Canas beat Italian Gianluca Naso 6-7 (8-10), 6-3, 6-2; Italian Potito Starace beat Croat Marin Cilic 6-4, 2-6, 6-4; Czech Radek Stepanek defeated Finn Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 3-6, 6-3; and American Mardy Fish outlasted Frenchman Michael Llodra 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2).
