Favored Big Brown wins Kentucky Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 3 (UPI) -- Big Brown, making just his fourth career start, won the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby Saturday at Churchill Downs.

He was the first horse since 1926 to win from the 20th position and also was one of only seven undefeated horses to win in the long history of the race

Big Brown, starting from the outside post, made his move just past the three-quarters marker and took the lead over Bob Black Jack. The time of the race was 2 minutes 1 and 4/5ths seconds

Eight Belles, the lone filly in the race, was second, but was hurt and was down on the track shortly after the race. Denis of Cork was third.

Onsite veterinarian Larry Bramlage said Eight Belles broke both front ankles and was immediately euthanized after the race.

Jockey Kent Desormeaux, riding Big Brown, captured his third Kentucky Derby. He won with Real Quiet in 1998 and with Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000.

Big Brown was made the Kentucky Derby following his wire-to-wire win in the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park. The 3-year-old is undefeated in four career starts.


Kim leads by 4 shots at Wachovia Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 3 (UPI) -- Anthony Kim posted a 6-under 66 Saturday to take a four-shot lead after three rounds of the Wachoviia Championship.

The 22-year-old Kim, looking for his first PGA Tour win, played a bogey-free third round for a total of 13-under 203.

Second-round leader Jason Bohn chipped in from 35 feet to save par at the 18th hole and shot an even-par 72 to share second place with Heath Slocum at 9-under 207. Slocum holed out for eagle at the 15th on the way to a 68.

Stewart Cink chipped in for birdie from beside the 17th green and carded a 65 to move up from a tie for 41st place into a share of fourth with Dudley Hart (70) at 8-under 208.

Geoff Ogilvy (69) and Jim Furyk (71) were tied at 209. Fred Couples, Vijay Singh, Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson were among the other players within eight shots heading into the final round.

Price leads seniors by two shots

AUSTIN, Texas, May 3 (UPI) -- Nick Price shot a 5-under 67 Saturday to widen his lead to two strokes going into the final round of the seniors FedEx Kinko's Classic at Austin, Texas.

The 51-year-old South African was at 12-under 132 -- a tournament scoring record for 36 holes -- and will be seeking his first Champions Tour win Sunday.

Loren Roberts and Scott Simpson both shot 66 to share second place at 10-under 134, with Tim Simpson (69) and Denis Watson (70) three strokes further back at 137.

No one else was within five shots of Price, a three-time major champion and an 18-time PGA Tour winner.

This is the first time Price will carry a lead into the final round of a Champions Tour event. He won the 1994 British Open and the 1992 and 1994 PGA Championships.

Defending champion Scott Hoch (71) was tied for sixth place with Fred Funk (71) and Bob Gilder (70) at 6-under 138.


Creamer leads SemGroup Championship

BROKEN ARROW, Okla., May 3 (UPI) -- Paula Creamer bogeyed two of her last three holes Saturday but still led after three rounds of the SemGroup Championship in Oklahoma.

Creamer finished with a 2-under 69 and completed 54 holes at 3-under 210.

Hall of Famer Juli Inkster, who lost a playoff at this event last year to Mi Hyun Kim, turned in a 4-under 67 Saturday and moved into second place at 1-under 212.

Brittany Lang shot even-par 71 and is third at 214.

Lorena Ochoa's bid for a fifth consecutive win is in jeopardy after her Saturday 71 left her in a tie for sixth at 218.

"You never know," said Ochoa, who could join Annika Sorenstam and Nancy Lopez in the record books with five straight wins. "I'm not too far behind. I can get here and make some birdies and see what happens."

Leta Lindley (72) and Angela Stanford (71) are tied for fourth at 215.


Nadal, Ferrer win Barcelona semifinals

BARCELONA, Spain, May 3 (UPI) -- Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer were Saturday's semifinal winners at the $1.29 million Open Sabadell Atlantico tennis tournament in Barcelona, Spain.

Their victories stoked a partisan crowd by setting up an all-Spanish final Sunday.

Nadal, the top seed and three-time defending champion, crushed Germany's Denis Gremelmayr 6-1, 6-0.

The victory gave the left-hander 102 wins in his last 103 matches on clay courts.

"I am very happy with the way I have been playing in my first two clay-court tournaments," Nadal said, having won last Sunday's Masters Series final in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Ferrer, the No. 2 seed, overcame Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka 7-6 (10-8), 6-3.

On Sunday, he will try to upset his countryman to grab his seventh career tournament title.

Heading into Sunday's match, Nadal's record in Barcelona is 20-1.
