LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 2 (UPI) -- Proud Spell, the runner-up in last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Filly race, captured the Kentucky Oaks Friday on the eve of the Kentucky Derby.
The race was run on a sloppy track at Churchill Downs.
Ridden by Gabriel Saez, Proud Spell broke well from the middle of the 10-horse field and settled into second behind pacesetter Bsharpsonata.
The fillies maintained their positions along the backstretch and into the turn for home before Proud Spell seized the lead at the top of the stretch. Proud Spell pulled away for a five-length victory.
Little Bell finished second and Pure Clan was third.
The winning time for the 1 1/8 miles was 1:50.01.
Rounding out the finishing order were Golden Doc A, Bsharpsonata, Country Star, A to the Croft, Rasierra, Awesome Chic and Absolutely Cindy. Scratched from the race were Elusive Lady and Eight Belles who will start in Saturday's Kentucky Derby.
Proud Spell is owned by Brereton Jones, a former governor of Kentucky. It was the filly's fifth win in eight career starts and brings her lifetime earnings to $1.28 million.
