MILWAUKEE, May 2 (UPI) -- Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Yovani Gallardo Friday was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a torn ligament in his right knee.
The right-hander sustained the injury in the fifth inning of Thursday's 4-3 victory against the Chicago Cubs when he collided with outfielder Reed Johnson during a bunt attempt.
Gallardo remained down for several minutes in pain but stayed in the game to pitch the sixth inning.
Possible season-ending surgery is being considered, but a decision will not be made until swelling in the knee subsides.
"Pretty devastating," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said on the team's Web site. "The doctor said no further damage could have happened by going back out to pitch … once it's torn, it's torn. Going out to pitch didn't cause any additional problems."
He started this season on the disabled list after undergoing left knee surgery in spring training.
To date, Gallardo has no record with a 1.80 ERA in three starts (20 innings).
