NEW ORLEANS, April 29 (UPI) -- Chris Paul's triple-double Tuesday lifted New Orleans to a 99-94 win over Dallas that decided their Western quarterfinals.
The Hornets moved into the second round of the playoffs for the first time in six years with their fourth victory in five games. They last reached the second round in 2002, when they beat Orlando.
Paul finished with 24 points, 15 assists and 11 rebounds.
David West added 25 points and seven rebounds, and Jannero Pargo scored 17 points for New Orleans, which will play Phoenix or San Antonio in the second round. San Antonio had a 3-1 series lead with Game 5 of that quarterfinals scheduled for later Tuesday night.
Dirk Nowitzki had 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead Dallas, which dropped out of the post-season in the first round for a second consecutive season. A year ago, as the West's top seed, the Mavericks lost in six games to Golden State squad that was seeded eighth.
