MLB: Philadelphia 8, Pittsburgh 4

PITTSBURGH, April 27 (UPI) -- Ryan Howard's two-run homer was the big hit in a five-run top of the first inning Saturday when the Philadelphia Phillies beat Pittsburgh 8-4.

With two runs and two hits, second baseman Chase Utley improved his batting average to .374. Utley has 14 multi-hit games before the season is one month old.

Geoff Jenkins had two hits with an RBI and a run scored, while Pedro Feliz, Jayson Werth and Eric Bruntlett had one RBI each for the Phillies -- who have won three in a row and six of their last seven games.

Winner Kyle Kendrick (2-2) yielded four runs -- three earned -- and seven hits in seven innings.

Pittsburgh got an RBI single and solo homer from Nate McLouth. Freddy Sanchez had two hits and one RBI and Brian Bixler drove in a run for the Pirates, who have dropped three in a row.

Losing pitcher Matt Morris (0-4) was torched for six runs and six hits in 1 2/3 innings.
